John McCain, Hero
It is, of course, horrible news that Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain has been diagnosed with a quick-spreading form of brain cancer.
Everyone of good will wishes him the very best. He is an honorable man, a decent man — a man who represents the best America has to offer.
He is, indeed, an American hero — and not just because he served in Vietnam and became a prisoner of war.
That experience could have soured him for the rest of his life. Instead, it energized him. He ran for Congress in Arizona and won. He ran for the U.S.Senate and won.
In his time in the Senate, he has served admirably and well. He is chairman of the Armed Services Committee. He has been in the forefront of efforts to put reasonable limits on campaign spending. He has spoken out on numerous major issues facing the nation.
And, of course, he made an honorable run for the White House.
Mr. McCain is a man who deserves the respect and best wishes from all Americans
